For nearly 200 years Shoal Creek, which winds for 11 miles through the heart of Austin, has been the source of stories about buried treasure since the 1830s, when troops from Mexico camped along the creek. The story goes that a Mexican general and some of his soldiers turned on the troops, stealing the Mexican army payroll in gold and burying it somewhere along the banks of the creek.
